During the summer flowering season, the reserve is ablaze with brilliant crimson flowers and the walk is a very special experience. Further inland the bush changes from typical coastal forest of pohutukawa, kohe, kohe, karaka, titoki, ngaio and akeake to other native trees such as rewarewa, tawa and kanuka. This walkway includes walks through wetlands and is also well known for it's native birds which include tui, bellbirds, fantails and kiwi.

Ohope Beach, New Zealand
Mokoroa Bush Scenic Reserve
Comprising about 325 hectares of regenerating native bush, this reserve offers a well-established walkway, the Whakatane Birdwalk. In 2009, the first kiwi were released into Mokoroa Bush Scenic Reserve. They have joined other birds that have wandered into the reserve from the nearby Ohope Scenic Reserve. The best time to hear kiwi calling is in the first two hours after sunset.
Known to the locals as ‘The Bird Walk’, this portion of the Ngā Tapuwae o Toi track offers a number of views over Whakatāne and the surrounding area. Dogs are not permitted on the track so as to protect the wildlife, including kiwi.

Whakatane Heads, Whakatane
Kohi Point Scenic reserve
This reserve adjoins the Kaputerangi Historic Reserve and comprises 154 hectares of native bush extending from the ridge above the Whakatane Heads, across the valley to Otarawairere, and along the coast to the west end of Ohope Beach. A major walking track, Ng Tapuwae o Toi, leads from Whakatane to Otarawairere Bay and West End.
Harbour Road, Ohope, New Zealand
Port Ohope Scenic reserve
Keep driving east along Harbour Road, and you will end up at this spacious harbour-side reserve. The reserve has the main boat ramp for Ohiwa Harbour and can be a busy place in the summer. The water ski area is west of the boat ramp. Surfcasting into the main harbour channel is popular and can be productive. Walking access is provided to the harbour entrance. Swimming near the car park is popular, but be aware that strong currents nearer to the harbour entrance make swimming and kayaking more hazardous as you approach this area.
